As cloud transformation experts, we should be well placed to deal with disruption to the way we work.
Having some work done at home and need a couple of days working from home to make cups of tea for the plumber? Not a problem.
Dealing with a wifi outage at the office? Take your laptop and go and work in a coffee shop.
But a global health crisis resulting in entire populations being strongly advised to work from home for the foreseeable future is an altogether unprecedented situation.
It has been looking likely for some time that the UK and Dutch governments would need to take drastic action to alleviate the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak. Last week, we asked all CTS employees to work from home for two days and to raise anything risks and concerns if we needed to do this long term.
This proved to be a timely experiment, as the following Monday the decision was made to ask all employees to work from home until further notice.
The feedback from our employees from the two-day experiment was largely very positive. The general view was that work can largely continue as normal and that working from home is a regular occurrence for many within the business. The difference with this situation is that we don’t know how long we will be working from home for!
So, what can we do to try to maintain a semblance of normality in what is clearly an extraordinary situation? Maybe we can rely on the tech we have to help us.
The People Team are doing daily ‘standups’ via Google Hangout, replicating our normal working day but sat in the comfort of our own home. Our People Operations Partner is busy producing slide decks so that she can deliver training programmes remotely. We even have a lunchtime video conference meeting just to catch up and think about what more can be done.
Other teams are embracing the situation with similar levels of enthusiasm. In the upcoming days, I’ll be sharing more about how the rest of the business is using technology to stay connected.
